LAAMB

Aly Ndiaye Rose and Ben Aylon present LAAMB, the first album dedicated to the rich rhythms of traditional Senegalese wrestling culture, known as Laamb. Recorded with five additional drummers, the album brings together six core rhythms, each representing a different dimension of laamb culture and history.
Considered the most popular sport in Senegal, laamb originates from the Sine Saloum region and is closely associated with the Serer community. Its drumming tradition carries a distinct sound and internal logic that differs from the sabar styles commonly identified with mbalax, the most internationally recognized Senegalese rhythm. The flow of laamb rhythms is grounded, direct, and functional, accompanying the preparation, entrance, and intensity of the wrestling arena.
LAAMB is the first album-length recording devoted specifically to this wrestling drumming tradition, presenting it with clarity and precision.
Aly Ndiaye Rose, one of the eldest sons of the legendary Doudou Ndiaye Rose, is among the leading master drummers of sabar today. Known for his extraordinary musical memory and deep knowledge of both ancient communicative drumming techniques and artistic repertoires across Senegal, Aly plays a central role in preserving and transmitting the Ndiaye Rose family legacy.
Ben Aylon began studying with Aly in 2010. Under his guidance, Ben developed a unique Senegalese drum set and performance technique that enables him to recreate the sound of a large sabar ensemble as a solo performer. His innovation received the acknowledgment of Doudou Ndiaye Rose, and his performances have reached millions of viewers through Senegalese television and social media.
