Xalam
Released May 28th, 2021
World Music Network, Riverboat Records
Released May 28th, 2021 on World Music Network / Riverboat Records, Xalam reflects Ben Aylon’s years of travel and collaboration in West Africa. Since 2008, Ben has researched Senegalese sabar drumming, studying with Aly Ndiaye Rose, son of the legendary Doudou Ndiaye Rose. He developed a unique hybrid drumming style, playing ten African drums simultaneously to create a massive one-man tribal sound.
The opening track, “Xalam,” recorded in Dakar with Doudou Ndiaye Rose and his sons, features the ancient West African string instrument that gives the album its name. Inspired by ngoni master Bassekou Kouyate, Ben blends melodic xalam and djeli ngoni with powerful percussion.
Tracks such as “Alafia” and “Jonibenina” feature Mali’s renowned singers Amy Sacko and the late Khaira Arby, recorded in intimate, improvised settings across Europe. “Hulem Belibe,” with Israeli-Ethiopian vocalist Aveva, bridges West and East Africa in a heartfelt collaboration.
Years in the making, Xalam honors the rhythms of Senegal and Mali while elevating them into a fresh contemporary setting, melding tradition, innovation and Ben’s own Middle Eastern roots. The album also holds a special meaning for Ben, as both Doudou Ndiaye Rose and Khaira Arby passed away on his birthday, August 19th, lending the project a deeply spiritual dimension.
