LAAMB

Senegalese Wrestling Rhythms

Aly Ndiaye Rose and Ben Aylon present LAAMB, the first album dedicated entirely to the rhythms of traditional Senegalese wrestling. Recorded with five additional drummers, the project brings together six core rhythms, each reflecting a different dimension of laamb culture, ceremony, and history. Laamb is the most popular sport in Senegal and one of the country’s central cultural rituals. Rooted in the Sine Saloum region and closely associated with the Serer community, its drumming tradition carries a sound and structure distinct from other Senegalese styles.

Unlike the sabar rhythms commonly identified with mbalax, laamb drumming moves with a different weight and intention. It accompanies the preparation, entrance, and intensity of the wrestling arena, functioning as both signal and force. LAAMB is the first album-length recording devoted to this drumming tradition, produced by Ben Aylon under the guidance of his teacher Aly Ndiaye Rose and the Ndiaye Rose family.

Recorded in Senegal, this album stands as a focused contribution to the preservation and transmission of wrestling drumming culture.
